Ranil vetoes
bid to impeach President
Government
has no plans to impeach President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga,
The Sunday Times reliably learns.
According to
UNF sources, Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, pooh poohed the
idea at a recent meeting of the Government Parliamentary Group.
Some UNF Parliamentarians
had mooted the idea of an impeachment resolution but Premier Wickremesinghe
said he would not endorse such a move, according to a highly-placed
UNF source. There was complete silence after his remarks and the
matter ended there, the source said.
The same source
said the UNF government would continue to opt to work with President
Kumaratunga.
One of those
maintaining a close dialogue is said to be UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema.
In the recent weeks, she had expressed the view that she was opposed
to the setting up of a national government.
