B'desh strives to improve
There are ups and downs in any walk of life on and off the field.
Bangladesh, minnows to international cricket, will strive to improve its image day-by-day said skipper Khaled Mashud at a media briefing on Friday held at the SSC, to outline the sponsorship package for the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh two Test series and the one-day series.

The meeting was chaired by the Chairman, Cricket Board Interim Committee, Hemaka Amerasuriya in association with Mr. Upali Madanayake, Chairman and Hemantha P. Perera Director (ACL Cables Ltd.), Anura Tennakoon, (CEO), Jayantha Kudahetty, Manager Ajit Jayasekera, Coach Dav Whatmore. -B.W.

Tudor to miss first Test
Alex Tudor has been ruled out of next week's first Test between England and India at Lord's.

Tudor, who was Man of the Match in the last Test against Sri Lanka a month ago, was reassessed on Friday and it was revealed that he will be out for at least two more weeks with tendonitis.

The squad for Lord's will be announced shortly, after postponement from yesterday because of numerous injury concerns. Marcus Trescothick (fractured thumb) and Andrew Caddick (side strain) have already been ruled out.

Thomians in a run spree
A record first wicket partnership of 204 runs between Isuru Warnakulasuriya who made a solid 112 and S.Panduwawala 74 helped S.Thomas' Mt Lavinia to score an imposing 375 for 6 in the quarter final match of the Under 17 Division I interschool match against St Joseph's Colombo which began at Ananda Mawatha yesterday. Nishard Mazahir too made a contribution of 54.

Two good partnerships one for the first wicket between Lasantha Kumara (57) and Sandun Senanayake (79) which yielded 143 runs and the other for the third wicket of 134 runs between Thushan Amarasuriya (78) and Mohamed Ikram (63) helped Saracens SC score a massive 403 for 5 against Negombo CC on the first days play of the Under 23 Division I cricket match played at the BOI grounds in Katunayake yesterday.

Navy make 219
Navy sent into bat first were able to muster only 219 runs in their Under 23 Division One cricket match against SSC which got underway at Maitland Place yesterday. SSC in their turn were 60 for no loss.

Marians take honours
Chilaw Marians took honours on the first days play of their Under 23 cricket encounter against NCC which began at the NCC grounds yesterday. Taking first lease of the wicket NCC were bowled out for 200 and the Marians were sitting pretty on 73 for 2 at the close.

Tea and rugby go hand in hand
Big boost for Sri Lanka rugby via tea. The Sri Lanka Tea Board chairman former All - Ceylon cricketer Ronnie Weerakoon through the initiative from the Minister of Plantations Lakshman Kiriella has decided to prop the game with a sponsorship package of Rs. 1.5 million to help the rugby union for the development of the sport.

This was revealed to the Sunday Times by the Chairman of the selection committee, Tikiri Maramabe.

It was a fine move by the former Minister of Sports, who is still interested in promoting sports and its development at grassroots level. The package is for one year, but it will be continued said Tikiri. -BW
