John: Minister-in-waiting

President Chandrika Kumaratunga is holding back the appointment of Minister John Amaratunga as the Christian Affairs Minister despite Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe nominating him for the job three weeks ago.

Minister Amaratunga told The Sunday Times that the President had not responded to the request made by the Premier.

"The Prime Minister recommended the appointment three weeks ago and I am still waiting to take oaths. The reason for the delay has not been notified but it maybe linked to the on going political battle," Mr. Amaratunga said.
