LTTE promises
'good behaviour'
The LTTE yesterday agreed to abide by provisions in a recent agreement
reached with the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission for sea movement between
the north and east.
The assurance
was given at a meeting between SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde and LTTE's
political wing leader S. P. Thamilchelvan in the Wanni last afternoon. The
SLMM's deputy chief Hagrup Hauckland said yesterday's Wanni meeting
was positive.
Mr. Furuhovde
went to the Wanni yesterday after the Navy complained that the LTTE
boats were sailing too close to the shore in violation of the agreement.
He said SLMM monitors had confirmed there had been some deviations
and this was taken up at yesterday's talks with where the LTTE admitted
certain violations and pledged to strictly abide by the agreement.
Before going
to the Wanni, the SLMM chief had discussions with senior Navy officers
in Trincomalee.
