Ko wins all
The Millennium Trophy 2002 competition just concluded at the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club was an impressive success. On the opening day Prof. A.H. Sheriffdeen stole a march over a century of competitors to settle for a stunning 6 under par nett 65 round and be declared the best performer for the day.

He drove with accuracy, seldom strayed and on the greens he was firm and positive. It was altogether a great day for him and his breezy smile sitting in the foyer after the game was an indication that he was pleased with the world.

Sanjay Gunewardena from Grandpa Norman's Clinic has very quickly dropped to 14. The young fella is playing good golf and it came as no surprise when he once again played a below par nett round.

He struck 67 and came second. Satoru Tanokura 68, Ananda Jayasekera 70, Alain Gyi 70, Anel de Silva 70 and S.K. Jayakody impressed with creditable scores. Bandula Weerasinghe had good reason to be talking about his commendable score of nett 71.

Centurions
Error riddled centurions came in galore. There were a quarter century of them and the most distressing came off the clubheads of Rohana Wittanachchi, Rohan Fernando, Sunil de Costa and Lalinda Dharmaratne. There was some degree of earth moving and hasty visits to the ponds by Amal Tudawe, Rajan Joseph, A.I. Gooneratne and Gerard Amerasinghe.

The 2nd day's play was as impressive with a few excellent scores recorded. Korean Joe II Ko was in splendid form. A good looking player he is quite impressive off the tee carrying on in the groove smooth swing.

Deadly enthusiastic he makes the grade often and on Sunday he was at his best with a tremendous 6 under par nett 65 to be judged the best for the day and be accorded a miniature reception from the members of his community who are regulars at the Ridgeways.

Sriyan de Soysa's nett 65 was as impressive and the diminutive fella was unfortunate to lose the 1st place beaten by Ko who had a better rear nine.

Lalith Ramanayake shot a tremendous nett 66, received quite an ovation and played host to a big ring of well-wishers through an elastic period at lunch time. Norman Gunewardena recorded his best score for the year. 2 under par nett 69 was good cause to be jubilant and he showed every sign of distinct pleasure at the pleasurable 19th. Others who were impressive were Amrith de Soysa 70, Sumal 'Access' Perera 71 and Anel that man again Silva 71.

Twin Centurions
In the 2 outings over the weekend the following picked up scintillating centuries with some degree of damage to the course, extra mileage and substantial contributions to the coffers of the pond boy who sang a few hosannas to the lavish contributions on the way home. Kiruba Kumarakulasingam, Carl Tranberg, Ajanta Mylvaganam, Jit Wanigasekera, Saman Premasiri and S.A.K. Abeywardena.

Confetti
There were an untidy crop that contributed to packs of confetti surprising Sohli Captain and Lalin Samarawickrema were the most lavish. In the final analysis popular Korean star Joe II Ko was oustanding. His scores of 73 and 65 were totally adequate to take the handsome trophy and have his name recorded on the panel for distinguished winners.
