The 17th death anniversary of popular film actor turned politician
Vijaya Kumaratunga falls on Wednesday, February 16. The husband
of President Chandrika Kumaratunga was brutally gunned down on Feb.
16, 1988 outside his residence in Narahenpita.
Vijaya
had dreams of joining the police but destiny extended him a different
path. Having played his maiden role in Sugathapala Senarath Yapa’s
“Hanthane Kathawa”, Vijaya went on to change the face
of the reel life heroes by clinching memorable roles in films directed
by top directors. His roles in both commercial and artistic films
won him acclaim from all parts of the country and he was the undisputed
popular actor for years until his sudden demise.
The
roles he played in Bambaru Ewith, Karumakkarayo, Baddegama and several
other films are still remembered by the spectators. Dabbling in
politics in later stages, Vijaya founded the Sri Lanka Mahajana
Party and continued a valiant struggle to restore peace in the country.
He led peace missions to the North on several occasions. Vijaya
will be remembered for his heroic roles both in reel and real life.
