Other
work for him
Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa announced last week that
Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva would no longer be attending
the weekly press briefing. The reason was he has been selected to
lead the Government delegation for talks with the LTTE.
Be
prepared
And the President is particular that his delegates to the conference
be well prepared when they meet the LTTE representatives. So he
has ordered several copies of the biography of the LTTE leader Velupillai
Prabhakaran titled ‘An elusive mind’ and asked them
to read it before heading for the talks so they can be well armed
for the ‘psychological war.’
No
one suitable
It’s true that in Sri Lanka, people are entitled to a secret
ballot. But the fact whether a person cast his vote or not is not
a secret because a voter’s name gets marked on the register
at the polling station once the ballot paper is handed over to the
voter. So an interesting discovery was made recently. One prominent
person who did not vote at last November’s Presidential polls
was the Chief Minister of the Western Province Reginold Cooray.
He obviously didn’t find a candidate on the list he would
have wanted to vote for.
Blind
eye
A resident from Settappaduwa recently lodged a complaint with the
Negombo police about the number of gambling centres coming up in
the area and were becoming a nuisance to the people.
The
initial response that policemen would be sent to raid the places
but as there was no response for several days, the resident made
another call.
The response this time was that there weren’t enough men in
the police station to be sent there. And so the gambling dens are
continuing to thrive with the law officers turning a blind eye to
them.
