'Kirikodu Hithata' : Get closer to your heart
By Ramesh Uvais
Young wordsmith Nilar N. Cassim, who has given us a whole range of ear-soothing songs in a career spanning 15 years will be launching his latest 'Kirikodu Hithata' book, CD and cassette next Wednesday at the BMICH.
Everything about Nilar is so amazing, and his show 'Kirikodu Hithata' on Wednesday February 8 is also going to be equally amazing with several popular stars billed to perform at the enchanting show.

The in-from lyricist who had penned hundreds of catchy numbers, including latest hits like Unmadani Henguna, Chandani Payala, Kirikodu Hithata, Oba Giyama Duka Matadee, Ganga Thawama Tharunai, Hitha Manamalakam Karai will be also releasing a lyrics book at the launch.

Nilar's comprehensive knowledge in the Sinhala language is his major asset apart from other creative abilities. He is by far the country's first and perhaps the only Muslim to possess the highest qualification in Sinhala.

As a lyricist, the Matara Rahula College old boy first penned a song for the late songstress Malini Bulathsinhala about fifteen years ago at a time when Nilar was not a known name. Nilar is presenting his book as a tribute to the veteran songstress.

He has also written several theme songs for tele dramas including Senuri, Renagalawatte, Maya Avenue, Wara Peraliya and more. "As a lyricist I have penned songs to almost all popular singers in the country and I am extremely fortunate to have worked with the country's top music directors who set the right tunes for my words," said Nilar in an interview with TV Times.

'Mal Mee Es Aran' penned by me and sung by Amarasiri Peiris for Arumosam Wehi won the best singer Presidential award a few years ago. On the literary side, I have published a few books - translations from Tamil to Sinhala. By doing so, I feel my Sinhala knowledge can be used as a means to bridge any differences that exist between the Sinhala and Tamil people and also the Muslims. Award-wise I have been accorded with several accolades from leading universities and other organizations," he said.

Commenting today's song trends and the level of appreciation especially among the younger generation, Nilar says it's tragic that some private radio channels have transformed singers, musicians and lyric writers into virtual businessman giving little concern to quality. Wednesday's show at the BMICH will have a host of popular faces performing in dances, live performances and also singing some popular numbers penned by Nilar.

Nanda Malini, Sunil Edirisinghe, Edward Jayakody, Abeywardana Balasuriya, Niranjala Sarojini, Dayan Vitharana, Champa Kalhari, Amarasiri Peiris, Samantha Perera, Nirosha Virajini, Bathiya-Santhush, Kasun Kalhara, Nelu Adhikari, Asanga Priyamantha, W.D.
