PAFFREL
on LG polls violence
By Shelani Perera
The independent election monitoring body PAFFREL raised concern
over the increasing spate of election violence in the run-up to
the March 30 local polls.
With the attack on the Negombo Deputy Mayor’s house last week,
PAFFREL expressed fears that violence could increase in the next
few weeks.
The monitoring body points out that such violence would have an
adverse impact on the outcome of the polls.
PAFFREL
Executive Director Kingsley Rodrigo told The Sunday Times that when
compared to the Presidential election, an increase in violence at
a small poll was not a healthy sign for a democratic country.
“This
is the culture, and we have to oppose this or else there will be
an adverse effect on the country as a whole. It’s difficult
to understand that people are unleashing so much of violence at
a small election” said Mr. Rodrigo. He added that the authorities
should take appropriate action and even change the system.
PAFFREL
is to inform Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake of the
growing number of violations pertaining to posters, cut-outs and
banners which have sprung up in public places.
