Crack
down on Tiger fundraising: Anti-LTTE groups
From Neville de Silva
Anti-LTTE Tamil groups have urged European governments including
that of the UK, to crack down hard on Tiger fundraising that is
used for buying arms thus undermining the objectives of the peace
process.
The
Tamil Democratic Congress, a pan-European group opposed to the Tigers
and committed to democratic politics has also asked European governments
to investigate the numerous threats, intimidation and coercion by
the LTTE against the Tamil diaspora in the continent.
The
TDC passed several resolutions last week urging governments to act
quickly to halt such LTTE activities that not only threaten moves
towards a peaceful solution but also act as a break against Tamil
peace activists and democratic forces that do not accept the LTTE
as the sole representative of the Tamil people.
The
TDC noted with alarm that LTTE fund raising activities within the
Tamil communities in Europe and the UK have built vast sums of
money that increase the financial and military might of the LTTE
undermining efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the conflict.
It
has also expressed concern that these huge sums sometimes coerced
out of the Tamil people are being used for arms purchases for military
preparedness.
The TDC has asked the European governments to ‘send a clear
message’ to the LTTE that the intimidation of and threats
against Tamil peace activists will not be tolerated.
The
Tamil group notes with regret that the LTTE's campaign of terror
that has undermined the activities of Tamil democrats continues
‘unhampered in the UK despite the proscription of the LTTE
in the United Kingdom’.
