Nalanda
favoured to retain Dr. N.M. Perera Trophy
By Bernie Wijesekera
The 32nd Ananda – Nalanda limited over cricket match will
be played today (March 12) at the SSC grounds After a big yawn in
the 77th “Battle of the Maroons”. Play begins at 10
a.m.
During
the “big one” last weekend Ananda batted on for the
entire second day when rain halted the draw at 5.10 p.m. In the
process Amal Athulathmudali plodded on to score a 100.
In
the overs game Nalanda, the defending champions, with a strong and
aggressive batting line up led by hard-hitting Tarindu Arthenayake
are favoured to retain the title. Tarindu and M. Warnapura were
involved in a record 268 – run opening stand against Mahinda
Galle this season.
A record
for Nalanda cricket. Nalanda led by that attacking left handed allrounder
Gihan Rupasinghe could produce exciting cricket.
Ananda
is not short of talent. Skipper wicket-keeper batsman, Chathura
Herath, Viswaa Wijesuriya, allrounder Gayan Rupasinghe, Athulathmudali,
Ishara Wickremasinghe. With the right attitude they are capable
of turning tables on their erstwhile rivals, who are riding on the
crest of a wave of success in the overs game.
Weather
keeping fine it will be a fine day for cricket fans.
