Jawatte
‘Lions’ fighting a battle for survival
By Bernie Wijesekera
In fading light and clouds
hovering around we made a visit to the Shalika grounds to watch
newcomers Jawatte ‘Lions’ practising in virtual darkness
with no facilities whatsoever.
In spite of a rock hard ground, the youngsters
had determination and grit to train with the (assistance) neon light
coming from, the Apollo Hospital. The clubhouse for changing is
a dilapidated CTB double decker with no seats, was more fitting
for a Motor Museum.
Most of the players are drawn from emerging schools
– Dudley Senanayake MV., Kannangara MV, Borella and D.S. Senanayake
College.
It was a humble beginning for the club. They started
in 1990 indulging in tap rugby and football, at the Colts CC ground, which
is part of the Havelock Park. But now the venue is barred after
its re-development programme.
Clarence Moraes, president-cum player said, now
they had to run from pillar to post. A diehard rugby supporter Clarence
has played for the Havies and Petersons, before steering Jawatte
‘Lions’.
Jawatte ‘Lions’ year 2001 to 05 has
been playing in all ‘B’ division tournaments, the under-21,
24 and the Club 7s. They have participated in the Over -35 tournament
too. Moraes said that their motive is to help the less affluent
players to be occupied and lead a disciplined life, via rugby.
Former CH and FC player Ajith Perera is the coach
of the team which consists of about 30 players in the squad. Former
Army and Peterson player, Sampath Perera leads the team. Other players
with experience are – Asela Moraes (CR and FC / Petersons),
Roshan Opatha (Havies).
