Romesh Abhayaratne has been an outstanding allround
sportsman from Royal. He has indulged in cricket, and rugby meeting
with reasonable success, but as a golfer he has made his mark at
home and away.
At present he is a front line golfer. Excelling
at the RCGC greens and also in the States whilst representing the
Texas University. He has learnt much from his mother Evonne Abhayaratne
who has many firsts as a champion women’s golfer.
Mild manned Romesh says with humility that it
was his father Malin and mother who nursed him in golf as a kid.
A fortnight ago Romesh won the prestigious ‘A’
division Mercedes Benz Sri Lanka Country final 2006 May monthly
medal with 40 points. Now he will play in the Asian Country final
to be held in Gold Coast Australia, next month.
As a schoolboy at Royal he played cricket as a
bowling allrounder fast medium and a middle order batsman from 1984-87.
Played rugby First XV as a prop forward / lock. Besides the above
he has an academic career to fall back on.
Romesh played golf for the university of Texas
team from 1993 to 94 with Justin Lenard. This is the second time
he is representing Sri Lanka in the Asian Country finals in Gold
Coast firstly year 2000.
As a junior he was coached by Chris Seymour. In
the end he found his way to the National team as a teenager. At
Texas University it was legendary golfer Harvey Tenick who was his
coach.
