Latest technology to be highlighted in National ICT
Week
The Sri Lanka National ICT Week will be held from
September 11-17 to showcase the latest trends and developments.
The week will include INFOTEL 2006, organised
by Infotel Lanka Society; the 23rd Annual International Conference
of the South East Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC 2006),
hosted by the Computer Society of Sri L:anka; and the 8th International
IT Conference, organized by Infotel and managed by the University
of Colombo School of Computing. Attending the launch was Prof. Tissa
Vitarana, Minister of Information and Technology at the Cinnamon
Grand Hotel last week.
The decision to host so many meetings over a week
was taken after organisers listened to IT companies complaining
that hosting numerous separate events is too costly and does not
raise that much interest.
“This week will provide exposure to information
technology for thousands of visitors and participants. They will
be able to see successful case studies of the past and present applications
of IT, as well as those to be seen in the future. This exposure
will allow Sri Lanka to prosper through socio-economic development,
thus improving the quality of life of all our citizens,” said
Prof. V. K. Samaranayake, Chairman, Infotel Lanka Society. (RI)
At the launch sponsorship cheques were handed over by Sri Lanka
Telecom and PC House, the Diamond sponsors, as well as event sponsors:
Microsoft, Intel and Epsi Computers.
The ICT week will focus on envisioning an e-Nation by allowing
for ICT professionals, academia, business, policy makers, students
and users to find out about the latest trends and developments,
including the use of such technology for farmers and fisherman,
incorporating a disaster-warning system, as well as e-Governance.
SEARCC was set up in 1978 in Singapore and now
counts Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan,
Pakistan, India and Malaysia as members.
