Automated
fuel pumps for Lanka
Sri
Lanka has begun setting up automated fuel pumping
stations linked to computers with payment by credit
card, industry officials said last week. Laugfs Petroleum
Pvt Ltd, a local company that owns eight fuel stations,
on Monday upgraded one its stations at Maharagama
to an automated one with credit card swiping machines,
computer-linked pumps and fuel tanks. There are more
than 500 fuel sheds in Sri Lanka mostly owned by the
Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and Lanka India

to expand supermarket chain
Cargills (Ceylon) Ltd, owning a chain of supermarkets,
says that its growth in the food processing business
has had a positive impact on the dairy, agriculture
and livestock industries in the country and plans are
underway to give further impetus to these industries
by pursuing ‘relevant’ business opportunities.
The company also said that with the steady rise of disposable
income amongst the youth and the changing lifestyles,

Tea
is a household name in Sri Lanka, nay, in the whole
world and Ceylon Tea is renowned for its quality.
So how is it that most of us know so little about
it?
“Though we have a long history of tea in our
country, most Sri Lankans are not aware of the planting
process, manufacture and marketing of tea,”
says Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, Governor of the Central Province.
Keenly interested in the tea industry, the Governor
decided to organise an exhibition at the Ceylon Tea
Museum in Hantana, Kandy. “Ceylon Tea –
Pride of the nation” will be held on August
4, 5 and 6 from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.“ This
exhibition, which is focused on reviving the tea industry,

dancer Chitrasena who died last year is now in its
