The damaged residence of the MP |
Two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) were fired
at the MP’s residence at Poompuhar in Batticaloa town, but
the rockets did not directly hit the rooms where the MP, his wife
and their two children were sleeping.
The RPGs exploded on the roof which collapsed injuring
a constable on guard duty.
Batticaloa’s Senior Superintendent Maxi Procter
said evidence indicated that four people had come on motorcycles
around 9.15 p.m. and fired the RPGs which were aimed at the windows
but hit the roof.
Mr. Jayanandamoorthy, who survived an attempt
on his life in 2004, told The Sunday Times that he believed that
it was the Karuna faction that had attempted to kill him and his
family. The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission and the Army bomb disposal
squad rushed to the scene for investigations while the security
forces launched a cordon-and-search operation.
