Port workers back but warn of sterner action
Trade unions in the Colombo Port which went on
a go-slow campaign demanding a salary increase vowed to give their
best to clear the backlog piled up in the last few days but warned
of sterner action if the Government failed to fulfil its promises.
Unionists claimed it was a great victory that
the Government agreed to concede some of their demands and added
they believed it will stick to its promises made to them.
Government agreed to conduct a full study of the
salary discrepancies and to submit recommendations to the National
Salary and Cadre Commission in three month’s time while also
agreeing to add an allowance to the salaries of the Ports Authority
workers as a temporary measure.
According to the agreement, workers in Grades
7-23 would receive an allowance of Rs. 1500 and those in Grades
1-6 an allowance of Rs. 750, with effect from July. Investigations
into corruption in the Ports Authority would be carried out by a
three-member committee appointed by the President.
The committee is to comprise the Ports and Aviation
and Labour Ministry Secretaries and the Ports Authority Chairman.
