UN Dy. envoy calls for quicker tsunami warnings
In the light of the tsunami in Java last Monday
the UN Secretary General’s Deputy Special Envoy for Tsunami
Recovery, Eric Schwartz called for accelerated progress on early
warning systems.
He had completed a three-day visit to Banda Aceh
in Indonesia on Wednesday, a media release issued from his office
said.
Mr. Schwartz together with former US President
Bill Clinton, met senior Indonesian recover officials, NGOs and
aid workers and visited the island of Simeulue, which was battered
both by the December 26, 2004 tsunami and by a category 8.7 earthquake
in March 2005, the release said.
While commenting on the progress in Aceh, Mr.
Schwartz also expressed his condolences to the people and the Government
of Indonesia, while commending the signs of progress in Aceh as
unmistakable.
