Vets ready with tranquilizers
By L.B. Senaratne
In preparation for the Esala Maha Perahera, veterinarians
are being trained at the Peradeniya University Veterinary Medicine
Faculty, in the use of tranquilizer guns.
This is first time that such a training programme
had been undertaken, after the first tranquilizer gun was gifted
to the university by Dr. Nihal Karunaratne.
Dr. Karunaratne received this gun, termed the
Cap-chur gun, from its constructor and designer Red Palmer of the
United States when the former was in the US at the invitation of
Mr. Palmer, who is a multi-millionaire.
At that time the Cap-chur gun was the only instrument
for tranquilising elephants. Since then newer guns have been manufactured.
The Veterinary Medicine Faculty has now purchased
an air pressure gun termed MK II which is an addition to the Cap-chur
gun, its head Dr.Ashok Dangolle said.
He said the gun could fire around 100 tranquilizer
darts. He also said the Faculty is now training its personnel so
that every veterinarian who passes out would be able to use the
gun for tranquilization of elephants.
Dr. Dangolle said the Diyawadana Nilame is keenly
interested in this training programme and has given all the assistance
needed.
