‘Brokeback
Mountain’ at American Centre
Three Oscar award winner 'Brokeback Mountain',
the touching gay cowboy tale will be screened at 6.30 pm on Tuesday
July 25, 2006 at the American Centre.
Set against the sweeping vistas of Alberta's Rocky Mountains, the
film tells the story of two young men - a ranch-hand and a rodeo
cowboy - who meet in the summer of 1961, and unexpectedly forge
a lifelong connection, one whose complications, joys, and tragedies
provide a testament to the endurance and power of love.
Directed by Ang Lee and adapted for the screen
by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana from Annie Proulx's short story,
"Brokeback Mountain" is the most compelling piece of storytelling
of 2005.
Amidst all the hoopla of various agendas, though,
was a quiet, heartbreaking love story that was both of its time
and universal--it was the quintessential tale of star-crossed lovers,
but grounded in an ever-changing America that promised both hope
and despair.
Brokeback Mountain won three Academy awards for
Best Achievement in Directing (Ang Lee), Best Achievement in Music
Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score (Gustavo Santaolalla)
and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced
or Published (Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana). The film was also
nominated for five other awards.
