Celltel GSM speeding ahead on expansion

Celltel has also commissioned its 3rd GSM switch which has a capacity of 3 million subscribers while a full Disaster Recovery System is also now in place for their switches

The expansion drive by Celltel from last March, the biggest GSM expansion drive todate, has seen the completion of 200 towers in just 180 days, the company said.

"The pace set up in this speed of expansion has created a new benchmark not only for us but in the whole industry", said Celltel CEO Dumindra Ratnayake, adding that US $ 70 million has already been spent to date towards coverage and quality improvement.

According to Celltel, the coverage now is in 100% of all main towns such as Kandy, Galle and Polonnaruwa as well as second level towns which include Habarana, Maskeliya and Karapitiya.

Celltel has also commissioned its 3rd GSM switch which has a capacity of three million subscribers while a full Disaster Recovery System is also now in place for their switches.
