KMC Member sees unanswered questions in cleansing project

By Shane Seneviratne

JVP Kandy MC Member Anura Kumara Gonawala said that there were many unanswered questions regarding the Water Cleansing Complex within the council limits. He adduced this to the directing of all toilet wastes from trade stalls to the city’s main drainage system.

The wastes ultimately fall into the Mahaweli River near the Getambe and Katugstota bridges.

The situation was precarious he said, because the water needs of the citizens were met from this part of the river.

Mr. Gonawala said that in Japan there were as many as 52 methods of purifying water before it reaches homes, whereas here, only as few as 12 methods were gone through resulting in many admissions to hospitals.

If these admissions were scrutinized ailment wise, the Municipality would have to take the greater blame for the citizens being made to suffer sickness due to bad water.

It is the duty of the health authorities to penalize those responsible for this state of affairs as otherwise the situation might get out of hand, he lamented.
