Vehicle emission tests
shortly
Two companies have been selected to operate the
vehicle emission testing centres throughout the country and agreements
are expected to be signed with them shortly in a bid to combat air
pollution.
The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a memorandum
submitted by Environment Minister A.H.M. Fowzie to sign the agreement
approved by the Attorney General for the establishment of these
centres.
The agreement will be signed by the Motor Traffic
Department Commissioner after which testing will commence, initially
on a phased out basis.
The two companies were selected after calling
for worldwide tenders to operate these centres, Commissioner B.Wijeyaratne
said.
Vehicle emissions have been identified as a main
contributory factor in air pollution in the country particularly
in urban areas.
