Gangster; a woman and
two different men
'Gangster', a Hindi film about a woman who is torn
between her two lovers - a gangster on the run from the police and
a man who promises her a decent life is now screened (with English
subtitles) at the Regal Cinema Colombo.
Told entirely in flashback, the film is directed
and screenplay written by Anurag Basu. Played by debutante Kangna
Ranaut a woman living in Seoul, South Korea and Emraan Hashmi and
Shiney Ahuja play the other two major roles in 'Gangster'.
The movie is reflection of the statement that
the human heart in conflict with itself is the life blood of all
drama.
All is not well with Simran. She is young, beautiful
and a semi alcoholic spiralling towards certain doom, when she has
a chance meeting with Akash, who is a singer in an Indian restaurant
in South Korea. Their relationship graduates from friendship to
passionate love. It is then that Akash learns of the demons that
gnaw at Simran's soul, a girl who has a sordid past. Not only has
she journeyed from the bars of Mumbai to the Fareast, but she is
also the girlfriend of the dreaded gangster Daya, who is the most-wanted
underworld fugitive from India.
When Daya discovers her relationship with Akash,
he promises to go straight, in order to keep her and fulfill her
dreams of a normal, simple life. However, life is not so simple
and Simran discovers at that point that she is pregnant from Akash.
What Simran does to solve the dilemma, hurls her into a firestorm
that she could never have anticipated and now has to battle to be
able to unite with the one man that she truly loves.
The backbone of 'Gangster' is its story, which
though not unusual, still keeps you riveted to the screen until
the end, solely because of the way it has been presented by the
director. Without resorting to unnecessary gimmickry stereotypical
of commercial cinema, 'Gangster' makes a worth watching cinema.
Imported by Janitha Films, 'Gangster' is a CEL
release.
