In what appears to be a last ditch bid to salvage Sri Lanka's Grand Old Party -- the UNP -- it seems the leadership has turned to the country's traditional advisers to the kings -- the Buddhist clergy.
Pronouncements about the high rate of economic growth in 2006 and predictions of even a higher growth rate for 2007 confuse most people. The realities they face do not indicate an improvement in their living conditions.
The international community, especially nations in Europe, which pressures and pushes Sri Lanka to safeguard the ceasefire and keep the peace process boiling, shies away from similar public pronouncements when peace talks are collapsing in its own backyard and ceasefires are blown up with bombs.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall inherit the kingdom of God. In the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal where the king was until recently considered god-incarnate, the wind of peace is blowing in such a manner that everything seems to be falling in place, like a Shangri-la fairytale.
