Power to probe SriLankan, SLT  
The Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) is urging new rules to probe into any company where the government has a stake of 25% or more, a mandate it doesn’t have at the moment.
 
BoC Chairman accuses unions of conspiracy

Bank of Ceylon Chairman, Udayasiri Kariyawasam – much in the news these days over alleged corruption deals – says the bank is facing a conspiracy by a certain group with vested interests supported by ‘some unions’ at the bank. “At the time of my appointment, there was a decision to sell all Bank of Ceylon subsidiaries, but when I was appointed, I stopped this move,” he told The Sunday Times FT adding that potential buyers ‘may be orchestrating allegations’ against him, supported by some unions at the bank.

Minority shareholders in Sri Lanka - knocking on doors for ‘decent treatment’ by listed companies - won some support from the authorities this week.
 
Creative inventors and support mechanisms

H. M Sugathadasa, an inventor from Anuradhapura had to mortgage his house to find money to develop his machine and was on the verge of bankruptcy. Sugathadasa’s invention was a wall scrapper which made the traditional work which required lot of manual labour and material such as scaffoldings a thing of the past. However finding an investor was not easy for him. When he came to the Inventions Commission he was desperately looking for an investor but the way he marketed his product from Anuradhapura didn’t attract any investors.
