Thank you for setting a good example

By Carmini de Costa, Nugegoda

Human dignity and responsibility can still break through all racial and religious barriers.

My faith in the humanity of man, irrespective of race, religion or ethnicity was restored with a simple act of kindliness of a Tamil boy who was employed at John Keells Supermarket, Nugegoda.

It was Saturday, December 30, last year at about 9.30 p.m. when I realised that I had lost the gold chain I had been wearing.
Without any actual hope of finding my chain, I decided to start my search at the Keells Super at Nugegoda, which had been my last stop on Saturday night.

While the people at Keells were quite helpful, those on duty couldn't actually help me and I was directed to the night manager who was still on duty on Sunday as it was the festive season.

It was he who told me of this person whose duty was to sweep the place every night. The previous night having discovered the chain he had handed it over to the night manager.

To this boy it did not matter whether the owner of the chain was Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim or Burgher. Thank you dear boy for setting a good example to all of us adults who are so concerned with our heritage that we have forgotten simple acts of humanity. I wish to thank Keells Super too for employing people who are honest and trustworthy.
