For thousands of years the human-elephant conflict has dogged Sri Lanka. The plaintive cry in any dry zone village would be: “Aliya gahala merune” or “Ali ape kumburu vinasha kara”. (Died after being charged by an elephant or our cultivations were destroyed by elephants)
 
Violent youth
Trucks filled with boys in strange costumes, flags of varying colours draped over their bodies, boys roaming the streets begging tin in hand and unruly groups attempting to scale the walls of girls' schools. Even as rival school groups pass each other, the worst form of aggression being hooting and jeering. Mischief, fun and laughter…....part of being in the full bloom of youth.
 
Amma’s message

Ancient grandeur
Mental illness is far more common and distressing than we think - one in four families in Sri Lanka has someone with a mental illness and five out of the ten most disabling illnesses are mental illnesses. Lack of awareness and the stigma attached to these disorders are obstacles to their effective treatment.
