St. Anthony’s crush Thurstan 50-6
By Aubrey Kuruppu
The Antonians shown the way by three-try winger and skipper Kusal Rankoth, cut the Thurstan defence to ribbons late in the second half to score a smacking 50 points (5 goals, 3 tries) to 6 (2 penalties) win at Nittawela yesterday.
The Thurstanites were without interest for much of the first half but silly, inexcusable lapses in defence contributed to a first half score of 19-3.
After a Wijesiri penalty, Rankoth cut in, took an inside pass and passed the ball to the other winger Reyal to score. Then followed a try by Rankoth, following a Reyal try, which was converted by Wijesiri.
The Antonians were dominant in the second half as they scored almost at will. Wijesiri, Reyal (his second) and Imtisham touched down. The conversions were made by Wijesiri.
The Thurstan full back wasted plenty of good ball by kicking aimlessly into the hands of his opposite number.
The speed of the Antonians and the sureness of their handling made them appear winners from the outset.
Thurstan’s lock Sashitha put over their penalties.
