SLCA UK ‘Presentation Evening’ to develop cricket
The Sri Lanka Cricket Association United Kingdom held a ‘Presentation Evening’ at the earl’s Regency Hotel in Kandy to introduce their proposal for 2007 to help in the development of cricket at grassroots level.
The Association donated cricket equipment to some of the poorer schools in Sri Lanka, in the hope that soon international cricketers would emerge from one or more of these schools.
The local representative, Mr. S. Kasturiratne conducted the meeting at which generous donations were made to GinigathhenaMV, Hindu College Matale, Berrewaerts College Ampitiya, Hindu College Ratmalana, D.S. Senanayake MV Kandy, Sri Sangabodhi MV Nittambuwa, Chandrajothi MV Yakkala, D.B. Wijetunga MV Muruthagahamulla and Gangasiripura MV Gampola.
In addition, the Moratuwa and Kandy Ladies cricket clubs received cricket equipment. SLCA UK believes that women’s cricket is poised to take off in a big way in a matter of months.
Mr. Kasturiratne said that his association is fully committed to the development of cricket in Sri Lanka and that they have conducted various programmes during the past twenty years. He requested the recipients to put these materials to good use. In conclusion, he made the point that if this effort by the SLCA UK proves to be a success, they will be encouraged to continue the programme and other not-so-well-off schools throughout the country will benefit similarly.
