Trinity takes the plunge with glee

By S.R. Pathiravithana

The Trinity swimming squad

Let the old clichés die a natural death and in this new era it is up to us to make the new ones. For instance we can do away with “Like a duck taking to water and make it How a Trinitian takes to pool”. Living in the hill country far away from the sea and the smooth flowing rivers – in reality the lads from Trinity live in the harsh terrain where swmming is concerned, but their exploits at this sport is quite commendable.

Come a swimming meet, the name that hits the headline is that of a Trinitian or the team as a whole. “We have taken this sport very seriously and we intend making an everlasting impression about our present exploits even for the future”, said Prabhath Senanayake speaking to The Kandy Times on behalf of the school.

Migara Hulangamuwa

So far 15-year-old Heshan Unamboowe has been their ‘star in water’ after giving new timings to twelve events in two meets – making it six-a-piece. The other inspirational performer for Trinity has been Migara Hulangamuwa who so far has three records in two meets while Dilina Dissanayake too has one record made at the Short Course Championship this year.

Heshan Unamboowe

They started the year by taking the second place at the National Relay Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium held in March this year and a few days later took top honours as champions at the National Pentathlon Championships held at the same venue. At the second meet 12-year-old Migara Hulangamuwa did well to establish two new meet records.

In April Trinity took first place at the National Short Course Championships with Unamboowe (6) and Dissanayake (1) being responsible for records established by the Trinitians.

A few days ago in May, the Trinity swimmers showed their prowess once again when they took the title at the Age Group Swimming Championships with Unamboowe (6) and Hulangamuwa (1) creating new timings and bringing honour to their alma-mater.

Speaking of the meets to come – Prabath Seananayake said “There are two more important meets – the Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championships and the National Swimming Championships and we are bent on making our presence felt at these two meets too.
