Bhaila act fails to spare the axe
Deputy Foreign Minister Hussein Bhaila returns to Sri Lanka today empty handed after failing to secure clemency for a Sri Lankan girl facing death by beheading in Saudi Arabia. His highly publicised odyssey failed after he could not obtain appointments with officials or higher dignitaries in the Saudi Government or any immediate members of the family who were the one time employers of 19-year-old Rizana Nafiq.
 
Fuel price hike from midnight

The government raised fuel prices again last night as economic analysts warned living costs including transport fares will skyrocket further. From today, consumers will have to pay Rs. 6 more for a litre of petrol, Rs 4 for a litre of diesel and more and a rupee for a litre of kerosene.

 

Mistaken salute costs millions

In a sort of comedy of errors and terrors, a police constable saluted an armed robber who was dressed in police uniform — mistakenly thinking he was a senior officer carrying out a search operation in a jewellery cum money changer’s shop in Wellawatte.
 
Sri Lanka on chikungunya alert again
With an outbreak of chikungunya being reported from South India, health authorities here have once again warned that it could spread to Sri Lanka and have initiated awareness campaigns and preventive programmes including the elimination of mosquito-breeding grounds.
