Murder and robbery on Badulla train?

By Shane Seneviratne

A case where a person had allegedly given a poisonous substance to a group of people who were travelling in a train on Wednesday to attend a wedding in Badulla and robbed their jewellery while also killing a person in the process, is under investigation, police said.

They said the group of six - four males and two females - who had boarded the train at Veyangoda had been approached by the mysterious person introducing himself as a businessman. He had offered them some bottles of soft drinks allegedly mixed with some substance which rendered them unconscious. He had then removed the jewellery belonging to the group and vanished, police said. Kandy police carrying out the investigation said they found the body of one person from the group, lying by the side of the Colombo-Kandy railway line. Police said the post mortem had revealed that the person had died after swallowing a poisonous substance.
