CIMA Kandy helps Teldeniya Central Commerce Day

CIMA's Kandy office recently participated in a Commerce Day at Theldeniya Central College, Teldeniya. This annual event is in its third consecutive year and is organised by the Commerce Association of the college with the participation of commerce students from fourteen schools in and around the area.

CIMA provided a guest speaker for the event -- Prasanna Perera, Senior Lecturer Dept of Economics, University of Peradeniya, who discussed National Income Accounting covering Macro Economics and the Elasticity of Demand / Supply.

The objective of the commerce day is to develop the organisational skills of students and to give them an insight into the business world outside of the classroom. The commerce day provides the opportunity for students to experience the realities of business and learn how theory from the classroom can be put into practise.

This year approximately 300 students participated in the event from areas including Ududumbara, Hasalaka, Kundasala, Wallala, Kegalle, Wattegama and Katugastota. These are all areas in which CIMA is seeking active involvement outside the main market of Colombo to support education in Sri Lanka and directly benefit the student population in smaller communities, according to a CIMA statement.

Perera covered technical aspects starting at the base level of understanding to ensure that the students covered in depth all aspects required for their exams. By building on the fundamentals and ensuring a firm grasp of each main study area all students will enjoy greater exam success.

The CIMA office in Kandy provides both high levels of support for CIMA students and works to raise the standard of training and education in the area by working with local schools and tuition providers to ensure that students get the best on hand training as well as employment opportunities.

Other highlights of the event included guest lecturer P. Kiriwandeniya, former Chairman of the People's Bank. Kiriwandeniya who delivered a lecture on 'Entrepreneurship' covering the areas of -- how entrepreneurship can contribute to the development of the country, how to become a successful entrepreneur, the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and how to overcome these challenges.

He quoted real life examples allowing students to benefit from his own experience in founding SANASA Bank in Sri Lanka. CIMA said it will be working with schools in and around Kandy on similar events during the year to promote local learning initiatives and increased opportunities for the students of Sri Lanka.
