A star in the making

A final year special degree student at the University of Peradeniya, K.W. Lakmal Nilantha Indika, a talented basket ball, player, was selected for the Sri Lanka National Basketball Pool last November. A product of Richmond College Galle, Nilantha led the Under 15 (1994) under 17( 1996) and under 19 (1998) basket ball teams at his school. He was a member of the Galle District team that was placed third at the Junior Basketball Nationals in 1997.

Nilantha is the basketball captain and the current President of the University Sports Council. He was the best cager at the 5-a-side basketball Tournament conducted by the St Anthony's Katugastota Basket Ball Club. A singular honour came his way when he represented the combined university team in 2004 and scored 63 points against Kalutara District at the Senior Nationals.

Nilantha has been part of the Central Province team in the last few Basket Ball Nationals. He travels to the St Joseph's Balika Nugegoda courts on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays to attend National pool practices. The university makes a small contribution towards the cost of his travel and meal expenses. He is grateful to a well-wisher who has chipped in with a small donation. Nilantha would like to play basket ball as long as he possibly can. - AK
