Katugastota bridge in troubled waters
The slow progress in the construction of the multi-million rupee new bridge across the Mahaweli Ganga at Katugastota is posing a threat to the funding of the project as failure to complete the project in time may force donors to end funding, project sources told the Kandy Times.The bridge consisting of five lanes for traffic is being built at a cost of Rs. 450 million with funding from Kuwait.
 
Embekke is sinking and cracking
The sanctum of the historic Embekke Devale dedicated to God Skanda or Kataragama is in danger of collapse, with the floor being attacked by weevils over the past several years. The Embekke Devale is known for its elaborate wood carvings consisting of some 514 distinctive designs carved on pillars and other surfaces of the temple. The Devale was built during the reign of Wickremabahu III and is associated with his Queen Henakanda Bisso Bandara and a drummer Rangama.
 
VAT affects finance companies negatively
The value added tax (VAT) on finance leases and financial services at 15 and 20 percent has made a negative impact on finance companies, according to an expert in this field.“Finance leasing has now become costly as a result of this and repayments by the customers are likely to be affected adversely,” ......
 
NALAKA Goodbye is not forever?
One of Kandy Sports Club's undoubted match-winners, Nalaka Weerakkody, whose play was at times touched by sheer brilliance, announced his retirement (not tearfully!) a few weeks back.A product of Kingswood College; and a double international at junior level, Nalaka turned out for the college rugby team from 1991 to 1995, captaining in his final year.
