KMC to monitor food sales

The Kandy Municipal Council Health Department has started a programme to ensure that not only travellers but residents and local and foreign tourists could be assured that hygienic food is being sold in shops, restaurants and hotels. ‘Kandy City Safe Food programme’ would monitor all places which sell food and grade them after conducting thorough examinations.

“We are hoping to categorise all the places from 5-star hotels to small food stalls and grade them. A certificate would be issued specifying the grade. This would be a strict programme,” said Kandy Municipal Council Chief Medical Officer Dr. Asoka Senerath.
The Municipal Health Department has carried out 36 raids in September to detect unsafe food sold in the market. The public could call 081-2222275 and make any complaints in regard to unhygienic food sold in shops/hotels. An inspection would be carried out immediately.
