Drug busting thru’ peace committees

Peace committees will be revamped to aid the programme to bust the drug menace, said Kandy district DIG Kingsley Ekanayake commencing his official circuit under the new drug busting programme of the district. He was speaking at Gampola to police officers at a meeting arranged by SSP Gampola Ranjith Kasturiratne to re-organise peace committees.

He said the main purpose of commencing peace committees was to unite the various communities. The anti-drug program of the President is a noble concept that will help to end the use of drugs in course of time. He said that he was committed to implement the programme within his division to end the drug menace from society. He said he wanted the police to be examples to the rest of society in implementing the programme.

“Discipline has to come to society from us, policemen.” he said, adding that good policemen and peace committee officials who set examples to others would be rewarded later. Many top police officials including HQIs of the district were present at the meeting.

Battle begins

The Kandy operations office of the ‘Mathata Thitha’ (End to drugs) concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa started its programme of work recently after religious rites were performed at the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy under the leadership of Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake and Mr. Vajira Irugalbandara, consultant of the national program to end drug use.

The operations office located in the Kachcheri was opened amidst seth pirith chanting by Buddhist monks who invoked blessings for the success of the programme in the Kandy district.

The programme will be managed by a committee which will have the assistance of women’s groups in the Kandy district. According to the Chief Minister the programme is to cover all grama niladhari divisions.

Mr. Irugalbandara said the programme under the direct advice of the President will be operated to give meaning to the new concept, which is Kandy’s contribution to end the drug menace in the island.SSPs, HQIs, District Secretaries and chairmen and vice-chairmen of Kandy district pradeshiya sabhas were present at the occasion.
