Kandy: The hunt is on for four suspected drug dealers from Colombo who have been using the Kandy area as a distribution and transit point for their wide network, police said. Kandy Police sources do not wish to disclose further information. However they had received information on the four after arrests of several drug peddlers were made in the past few weeks. The four drug dealers are reported be distributing heroin on a large scale. The licence numbers of the vehicles they use to distribute the drugs have also been identified.

Kandy: On Thursday night a former prisoner who served 14 years in jail was re-arrested after he broke into a house and stole jewellery, cash and foreign currency estimated at Rs. 500,000, police said. Kandy OIC Anuruddha Bandaranayake said the culprit was reported to have been addicted to heroin and was released recently. He was also suspected to have been peddling narcotics on a small scale.

Peradeniya: A series of robberies from houses in the Peradeniya area has been reported, police said. They are said to be the work of an organized gang and some suspects are identified as Army deserters, they said. Police investigators have questioned several persons and taken in many of them for questioning However, they have not managed to make a breakthrough in the investigation. Two weeks ago the gang was reported to have stolen Rs.175, 000 from a house in Gangoda.

Gampola: Three men were arrested two weeks ago for illegal sand mining , police said. Gampola police said most of the other suspects are believed to have fled the area. After residents in the area complained to police of the ongoing racket a raid was launched in which they nabbed the three suspects. The trio had been arrested while they were mining in the Mahaweli Ganga. Police said they had launched routine checks along the river to nab any illegal sand miners who operate on a small scale.

Drug peddlers netted

Kadugannawa: Two men involved in the sale and distribution of marijuana were arrested last week, Kadugannawa police said. The two who are said to be residents of Gampola were arrested while selling the stuff to school children, police said.
