Nilar's journey
Starting as a poet Nilar joined 'Viwarana' magazine as a writer and became an associate editor. During this period he also worked for Ruhunu Service of SLRC. Joining Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLRC) in 1995 he conducted programmes on current affairs, worked as news editor and presenter. In 2000 he was awarded the Best Young Journalist by the Colombo University Media Unit. He had been felicitated for his service in promoting intercultural understanding.
Nilar authored several books including, "Asalwesiyage Sahithya' (Neighbour's literature) a book on Tamil literature in Sinhala, 'Sahothara Piyapath' (Wings of Brothers) collection of poetry by several Tamil poets and Sinhala translation of renowned Tamil poet V. I. S. Jayapalan's poetry. In 1994 he won the People's Award as the Best Lyrics writer and won Best Lyrics writer at SIGNIS award for the year 2006. Nilar had penned a large number of teledrama theme songs and songs for films 'Yakada Pihatu', 'Tharaka Mal', 'Hiriporada Wessa and veteran filmmaker Ms. Sumithra Peries' 'Yahaluwo' which is yet to be released.
