St. Peter’s stunned by unknown Borella lads
By Harry Jayachandra

The man, who introduced free education to Sri Lanka, may be clapping his hands in glee wherever he is. The school named in memory of the late C. W.W. Kannangara pulled of arguably the upset of the season when they defeated mighty St. Peter’s in the Milo All Island Under 18 Inter School Seven A Side rugby tournament league round played at the Royal College Sports Complex yesterday.

The boys from Borella were down by seven points to three at lemons. But they scored a try which was converted in the second half to edge out their more fancied opponents. CWW Kannangara then easily defeated Embilipitiya MMV by 24 points to nil to set up an interesting Cup quarter-final clash against Wesley today. Coach of the CWW Kannangara Asela Deshapriya speaking to The Sunday Times said; “I played for this school, and then represented Petersons. I felt I needed to give something back to the school and that is why took up coaching.

This time has been playing together from the under 13 age group onwards. As for our victory over St. Peter’s, I tool a day off from my day job last Saturday and watched our opponents in the Western Province ten a side final. I knew the game plan they would use and I drilled the boys in a counter strategy. And obviously it worked.”He added; “We practice on a sandy ground. We do get support from our principal and old boys. But we do need a sponsor desperately for basics such as mount guards, proper practice gear, food supplements etc. Just for the record even in the Under 20 Division One Segment ‘c” we lost only two matches this season.”Following is the quarterfinal line up for today,
Cup; Isipatana – Trinity, Vidyartha – St. Anthony’s Kandy, Wesley – CWW Kannangara and Kingswood – S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia.

Plate; Prince of Wales – Dharmaraja, Ananda – Thurstan, St. Sylvester’s Kandy – St. Peter’s College and St. Joseph’s – Mahanama. Bowl; Piliyandala MMV – St/ Thomas’ Matara, Science College -- Embilipitiya MMV and Zahira College – D. S. Senanayake.

Lumbini received a walk over from St. Aloysius Galle and thus will play in the bowl semi final. Kick off is at 8am today.
