Ari back in Govt fold

Former Information Director Ariya Rubasinghe, who defected to the Opposition at the time of the 2001 general election that brought the UNP to power, is now expected to assume a senior post in the President Rajapaksa Government.

Asked what post he was expecting in the Government, Mr. Rubasinghe said he was not aware, but that it was unlikely to be in the media field.

He readily conceded he had a discussion lasting more than five hours, with President Rajapaksa in Kandy last week.

He said he joined the UNP as he had differences with President Chandrika Kumaratunga and her powerful Minister Mangala Samaraweera and described joining Mr. Rajapaksa as a sort of home coming as he had grown up with Rajapaksas as a neighbour and relative“It was Mr. George Rajapaksa who brought me to Colombo as his private secretary in the 1970s when he was the Health Minister”, Mr. Rubasinghe recalled.
