Hard times for coir workers |
 |
Hambantota - A coir industry worker in shoulder-deep water in a pond in southern Sri Lanka, fishes out soaked coconut husks that are then dried and the coir turned into rope, matting and brooms. The coir industry with mostly women-entrepreneurs, is recovering after the industry was hit by the 2004 Tsunami. (Detailed report next week). Pic by J. Weerasekera |
