The second volume of writer and poet Buddhadasa Galappatty's 'Sahurda Satahan' (Notes of a Connoisseur) and a translation of a collection of poetry 'The Valley Below' will be launched on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 3.30 pm at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute Auditorium, Colombo 7.
'Sahurda Sataha' is comprised of 36 notes written to 'Veemansa' the literary supplement of daily Lankadeepa on Tuesdays, while 'The Valley Below' has 45 selected poems. The poems were translated by Malini Govinnage, who has given the Sinhala reader some memorable Sinhala translations such as Fontamara, The biography of Che, ‘The Bolivian Diary’ and ‘Cry my Beloved Country’. With this translation Malini ventures into English translations introducing Sinhala literary works to English readers.
'Sahurda Satahan-2' is the second volume of a collection of literary and cultural notes penned by Buddhi while the first volume of these notes came out as 'Sahurda Satahan' in August last year.
Sahurda Satahan-2 consists of notes written based on persons and events connected with literature, music, cinema, stage drama, television and other media. There also are the notes on cultural events in the country, launches of various cultural events and discussions and dialogues after such events happened in literary and intellectual circles.
'The Valley Below' is a collection of selected poems from Buddhi's eight books of poems published from 1971 to 2007.
The illustrations of both books have been done by Shantha K. Herath.
The launch will be addressed by Editor of the weekly newspaper 'Ravaya' on 'Media practice in Modem Sri Lanka' and Laksman Fernando who will talk on 'Literary translations from Sinhala to English'.
Buddhi and Malini have invited some of their teachers Amara Heva Madduma, Prof Sunanda Mahendra, Prof. Vimal G. Balagalle, Prof. Tissa Kariyavasam, Prof. Vinie Vitharana, Prof. A. V . Suraweera, Prof. Ratlma Wijetunga, Lakshman Fernando and Ms. Sumana Saparamadu to this event to present the first copies.
The event will be marked by a recital of a couple of poems, Sinhala originals and English translations by Rashmi Sangeetha, Navarathna Gamage and the members of Stage Light & Magic Inc. drama group and it will be compered by Kaushlya Fernando and Jayalath Manoratne.
