A decade of unhindered development in children's education

Providing quality learning to children with the dedicated touch and attention of an experienced care giver, Brisbane International School nurtures each of its students to grow with education and character.
Experienced as a teacher since 1983, Mrs.M.D.P.S Jeewandara, the founder and Principal of BIS pays meticulous attention to her cradle for moulding children of sound mind and values who will step out into the world, doubtlessly as capable citizens. It is her dedication which has been one of the key factors in BIS's continuous development growing from strength to strength.

Mrs.Jeewandara is happy of the heights of success her establishment has reached and believes in steady growth. The school now has classes from Montessori to 'Form 4' (Grade 9) with modern facilities such as an air conditioned Computer Lab and Library that aid the expansion of a child's scope of learning and hope to develop up to A/L's in time"

The methods of education in practice at BIS are meant to enhance the child's potentials by tapping in to hiss inner talents. In the primary levels from Grade 1-5 child centered education is in practice to help the child express creativity which leads to innovations. The rationale behind this move is to allow the child to learn with experience.

The tutorial staff members of the school are either trained teachers, or graduates, amongst whom some possess post graduate qualifications, especially those who teach Science, Maths, Biology, Physics and Chemistry. 'Mother tongue' is also another subject taught at BIS along with religion. The tutorial staff of the school now stands at 22.

The Montessori is equipped with materials needed for the kids' skill development. BIS methods have ensured that a quality English medium education is provided, and students who do not possess English language skills have been able to learn at least the class room language within a few weeks. The process involves 'Peer Learning' which has proven successful. Discipline is a must in the folds of BIS and Mrs.Jeewandara believes a sound religious education can have a hand in this process.

It is not only the tutorial staff which grooms the learning process, but parents too become partners in the education process at BIS. In accordance with standards of New South Wales Montessori association, with whom BIS (Montessori) is registered, the school holds once a term "Parent Teacher's Day" as well as "Parent's Activity Day" (for Grades 1&2 only).

This process allows the parent to become aware of their child's education and offers them insight on the class room activities and their child's progress. Amongst the commendable policies of BIS is to wave of fees from students whose fathers have sacrificed their lives in the war front. By policy the school allows the children of these war heroes to receive free education.

BIS has a healthy range of extra curricular activities such as Squash practices, Swimming lessons, Ballet and modern dancing and recreation which Mrs.Jeewandara believes are needed in building a child's morale and personality. In addition to all these, BIS offers courses on elocution, speech and drama from the Institute of English Music and Speech (IEMS). LMC (London College of Music) LAMDA (London Academy of Music Drama and Art) are also examinations for which BIS holds classes and is open to outsiders as well. Students were also awarded prizes by IEMS for their performance. The school is also preparing students for the London Edxcel examination.

For young learners Cambridge exams are also offered, which are KET (Key English Test) and PET (Preliminary English Test), these courses too are open for outsiders.

International assessments are conducted annually on the students' progress by the University of New South Wales-Australia, and a student of BIS won the coveted gold medal for English last year in 2007.
To celebrate a decade long journey of success BIS will mark this milestone with several events. The school launched its own website- www.brisbaneedu.org and held a concert on the 3rd of December at the Lionel Wendt from 6pm onwards. The show was a variety entertainment programme titled 'The Twelfth Night.' Students from all grades performed while the highlight of the show was a stage production of Shakespeare's 'The twelfth night' (hence the name of the show).

Of the journey trekked thus far the principal of BIS says- "BIS has achieved many of its goals during the past decade and has set many for the future and beyond"
