Winners few and far between at 2008 Craft Awards

At the Awards

Leo Burnett won top honours at Wednesday's 5th annual Reggie Candappa Craft Awards when they were adjudged the winner in the 'Best in Copywriting' Grand Award category while also receiving two 1st runner-up awards in the 'Best in Art Direction' Grand Award category, which proved to be the main awards of the night as there was no winner announced in the former category. The ads receiving the night's top recognition included 'Best in Copywriting' Grand Award winner, Montage magazine's 'Adolf Hitler' press ad, and 'Best in Art Direction' Grand Prize joint 1st runners up, StageLight and Magic's 'Noir' and GoodKnight mosquito coil's 'Bullets' press ads.

In fact, winners proved to be few and far between as nominee after nominee received 1st and 2nd runner up honours while a total of only six winners were announced: Leo Burnett for the Montage magazine 'Adolf Hitler' press ad in the 'Best in Copywriting' Grand Award category; Grant McCann for the Hallmark cards 'Someone Remembers' radio commercial in the 'Radio - Best Concept' category; Triad and production house Odlo-vfx for Laugfs Oil 'Powering Freedom' TV commercial in the 'TV - Best Use of Graphics/Animations' category; JWT for the Badu Paper Lanterns 'Red' press ad in the 'Print - Best Use of Photography' category; and Grant McCann for the Rocell 'Bath Ware' and the Tokyo Cement 'Corporate' logos in the 'Print - Best Use of Logo' category. Meanwhile, there were a total of 12 1st runner up awards, 20 2nd runner up awards and six merit awards handed out to a number of participants, including to advertising agencies such as Grant McCann, JWT, Leo Burnett, Lowe LDB and Triad, to production houses such as Video Image and Odlo-vfx, and even to independents such as Dilshard Ahmed and Nastars.

In addition, according to the Chairman of the Print Judging Panel Trevor Kennedy (of Leo Burnett), although there were fewer entries in total this year, compared to last year's stunning 550, the quality of the entries appeared to be much higher overall thus indicating that a higher standard was placed on what was entered. However, he cautioned, there were still some confusion about choice of category to enter as some pieces were obviously entered incorrectly.
