Everyone is talking about the possibility of the government holding Provincial Council elections before April 2009, and taking advantage of the victories so far gained on the war front. All this suggests the government is confident of winning.
Whatever the case, we voters should plead with the President and our political leaders to nominate honest men with proven ability, and weed out undesirables with reputations for bribery, corruption, thuggery and even murder.
We voters should be served by honest politicians, not people who are self seekers and claim Rs. 100,000 for housing allowances when they live in close proximity to the Parliament complex.
The judiciary should expedite all cases before courts against politicians charged with corruption and so on, and the police should expedite investigations and file action in courts and not delay the course of justice. In this connection, we may cite the case of Mervyn Silva and the recent crimes in Anuradhapura, where a doctor’s residence and dispensary were set on fire and destroyed.
Most important, the media has a responsibility to guide the voter by telling us all we need to know about those who have been nominated, so we can live without corruption and the public can live without fear.
If the President acts to ensure the voters are served by men of integrity, he will be seen as a great leader, who has fulfilled the promises made in the Mahinda Chinthanaya.
