Rotary Club gives helping hand to Pattiyawela farmers
Forty farming families in the remote hamlet of Pattiyawela near Horowpathana in the Anuradhapura district were the beneficiaries of a Rotary funded project to rehabilitate the irrigation tank providing essential water for farming. Farmers in this area are deprived of rain water for most of the year and are dependent on the reservoirs during the drought season.

The Rotary Club of Colombo Fort implemented the project which cost Rs. 1.65 million under the stewardship of Past President, Abhaya Panditharatne, with funds obtained from Rotary of Michigan USA and Rotary of Colombo Fort which was matched by Rotary Foundation, USA.

The tank capacity has now been increased by 40%-50% and permits farmers to cultivate their fields two seasons a year, significantly enhancing their income.

A simple opening ceremony was held on December 15, under the direction of the President Rotarian Kapila Dayaratne and Past District Governor Rotarian Mangala Gunawardena. The plaque was unveiled by the President of Rotary of Colombo Fort Rotarian Kapila and Rotarian Abhaya in the presence of a large gathering of the farmer community.
