Cinnamon Grand Colombo in a pilot recycling initiative launched a project on Monday to recycle flexi banners used for billboards into bags.
Rohan Karr, General Manager of the hotel told reporters that since Cinnamon Grand started using the flexi banners for promotions two years ago, they were stored safely till they came up with an environmentally friendly plan.
The hotel had come up with a plan to manufacture bags out of these banners by outsourcing the process to three tailors. He said the hotel plans to sell these once a month at a price ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 400 with the proceeds of the sales to be given to the Maharagama Children’s Cancer Hospital.
He said that the hotel pays Rs 6,000 each to purchase such flexi banners, which the hotel collected for two years and it is a non bio degradable product. “As such it is environmentally unfriendly and we thought of using them to produce an economic good while also giving employment and bettering the environs. We have collected about 50 banners so far,” he said. Professor Mohan Munasinghe, who chairs the Munasinghe Institute for Development, noted that recycling extends disposal capacity, saves money in disposal costs, conserves natural resources, creates jobs, and provides a reliable, cost-effective feed stock to industry.
He said in other countries products that can be made from recycled plastics are being identified by those manufacturers aware of the opportunities in recycling. Products that are or can be made from recycled plastics today include non-food containers, trash cans, fiber-fill for vests and jackets, traffic cones, carpet backing, insulation, plastic lumber and drain pipe. |
