Sri Lankan professor Ray Jayawardhana, Canada Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, was formally awarded the prestigious Steacie Fellowship by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on March 16 at a ceremony in Ottawa.
The highly competitive fellowships are awarded annually by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising scientists and engineers.
"Ray Jayawardhana is an extraordinary scientist whose international impact belies his age.
His recognition with a Steacie Fellowship is further proof that some of the biggest stars in astronomy are actually here on Earth, at the University of Toronto," said Professor Meric Gertler, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at UofT.
"It's a wonderful recognition not only for myself but for my research group," said Jayawardhana of the award, "especially given that this is the International Year of Astronomy."
